With our annual Dress for a Cause evening coming up on May 16th, a few committee members flew down to Memphis, TN to visit and learn more about the place we support through this event.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of their founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay. No family ever pays St. Jude for anything…. Anything. And that, to me, was the most amazing thing about this wonderful place. It offers families a sense of hope. Parents can do what they do best, and that is to put all their focus and energy into the needs of their child and not worry about how they will pay for medical bills. St Jude instills a peace of mind and a sense of security for families during trying times.

Ultimately our location on Charles Street (being off street level) wasn’t the right fit for us and for that we had to recognize the fact that it may be time to move on. But with that being said, we truly thank our customers for each and every day you came to visit our sweet shop.

party that benefitted Caritas Hospice.
This event took place on August 5th, 2011 in our South End location.

A Girls Night Out (GNO) at Sara Campbell is the perfect way to gather with friends and support a local organization. Here at Sara Campbell, we believe in working for the common good, helping in any little way we can…. hence, the idea was born to host fabulous parties and give a percentage of proceeds back to the community! If you have an upcoming fundraiser or benefit that needs an auction item, a Sara Campbell GNO would be the perfect addition!

So what exactly is a Sara Campbell GNO?: It is a private party for a host (auction winner in most cases) plus about 50 guests, in their choice of any of our six locations. We provide sips and savories and the host, along with her guests, receives an exclusive discount on Sara Campbell merchandise. What's better? Shopping is feel-good and guilt-free because 10% of the sales from the event will be donated to the charity of the host's choice. It's a win-win for all!

The Spotted Cod... a Secret Nest of Treasures

Sara talks about a fun little discovery she stumbled upon in Sandwich, MA called, The Spotted Cod.

Sara said: "I came upon a sweet discovery on my drive home from Hyannis while I was delivering both my daughter to a friends' place and yet another vat of goodies to our Nantucket store!". Sara is often traveling between all of the stores (six in total!) making deliveries and bringing smiles to all of our customers. "The good news is: Nantucket is cookin! The bad news is: I am doing a lot of driving and am easily distracted thinking I'll find treasure at any turn!".
This time, Sara did find the sort of treasure she was talking about, "today I stumbled upon a secret nest. A little store with treasures that are good for ones' home and soul plus much, much more! I was so impressed with the wonderfull shopkeeper I met; she rocks with talent, spirit, wisdom, and empathy!"
Sara suggests that everyone go on the adventure to The Spotted Cod but adds: "Don't be in a rush, there is lots to take in!".

The owner, Lee, says: "The Spotted Cod's focus is home, garden, and seaside living. We work with several vendors and artisans to create beautiful products and jewelry that you can only find at The Spotted Cod". The store is open year-round Monday - Saturday 10-5pm and Sunday 12-4pm. They abbreviate their days during the winter months, but enjoy having a year-round presence in the town of Sandwich.

Sara says: "There is nothing better than some good soul food with a fun date (or great husband) and an unnecessary bag of popcorn on a rainy afternoon. Make a promise to yourself (and act upon it!) to go see 'The Help', the movie based on the novel by Kathryn Stockett." Sara says the movie has an inspirational message that she hopes everyone will take away from it as well: "Have the courage to listen to your heart and believe that you can do it! You are good. You are smart. You are important!". And true to her calling she adds: "And the dresses and music are fabulous, I had to resist taking out the sketch pad during the film!"

Today, August 6th 2011 would have been Lucille Ball's 100th birthday. Let's celebrate her life by taking some time to watch one of her old episodes and have a good soul-felt laugh (maybe indulge in a piece of chocolate while doing so too...) this weekend! She truly is one of the funniest women ever born, and true to her name Lucy-- she was, and remains to this day, a bright light in the lives of so many!

Sara On: Summer Essentials & Style

We got Sara to take a brief break from her crazy busy schedule to sit down with us and talk "Sara Campbell Summer Essentials". We found out everything from her go-to summer dress, what she stashes in her beach bag, even down to her tried-and-true sunblock of choice.

We asked: "You're headed to the beach, what's in your beach bag?"

She answered: "I always have my beach bag ready so that I can grab it on the run. In it I have: my big round sunglass readers, swim goggles and cap for a long swim, a cotton print sarong in a fun summer print from Sara Campbell... various sunblocks (lip, eye, face, and body, SPF 30-35)...all Clinique. I usually stuff my week's worth of Women's Wear Dailys, recent magazines, and whatever book I'm in the middle of. No snacks, just lots of water. And lastly... a big hat from my expansive collection of vintage to contemporary straw hats, which I switch out on a daily basis!"

We asked: "What are you listening to on your way to the beach?"

She answered: "I don't get to pick my music because I never go to the beach by myself. I always have one of my girls in the car, and they are in charge of the music... which lately seems to be country!"

We asked: "Are you reading anything good at the moment?"

She answered: "I am listening to books on tape when I drive around to all of the stores... which is a lot-- right now I am in the middle of an Anita Shreve "Change of Attitude". Under the covers I am finishing up "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett; which I love and cannot wait for the movie!"

We asked: "Can you describe your go-to summer style?"

She answered: "My go-to summer style is so easy; hair in a scrunchie, for makeup I use just a little bit of foundation with a splash of mascara and lip gloss...nothing too fussy. I am always in a hurry so I get dressed very quickly. Three mornings a week I am at the gym by seven, so I throw my clothes into my gym bag with whatever jewelry plays well with the outfit. I am a sundress girl all summer long, with flip flops when it is a really hot day. My favorites this summer are our blue striped French knit trapeze dress, and our little linen shift with the ruffle around the neck. I love that one so much that we are now making it in some beautiful darker vegetable hues for August and September hot days. I love simple, clean, easy, and pretty... and these little dresses do that for me."

We asked: "What are some pieces that are essential to your summer wardrobe?"

She answered: "Michael Kors white sandles that go with everything, white vintage $15 sunglasses that I got from our stores (they come in a lot of different colors) that I don't freak out about if I lose them (which I do a lot, for example my Chanel sunglasses that I got for mother's day 10 years ago that I cannot find right now), a white t-shirt paired with khaki shorts, big straw hats, a new bathing suit (this year I bought an adorable pink Adrienne Vittadini one, although I suppose it's more of a bathing suit than a swimming suit), and Chanel pink lip gloss!"

We asked: "What are you drinking while entertaining on a hot summer evening?"

She answered: "I always love a very cold glass of pinot grigio, but when we are in Marion or on the boat it is fun to have a Mount Gay and tonic with a splash of lime...but there is nothing that tastes better than a big glass of club soda with ice, lots of lime, and a splash of lemonade for a hot summer day."

We asked: "Lastly, what is your favorite summer spot to unwind and relax?"

She answered: "I have to confess that I have two; sitting on my patio in Brookline looking into the garden, and sitting on the lawn in Marion on the adirondeck chairs looking out to sea."
